How to record and save your outdoor activities

Starting a Recording

  1. Open AltoTrails
  2. Tap the Record button on the main screen
  3. Wait for GPS lock (location indicator turns green)
  4. Tap Start to begin recording

During Recording

The recording screen displays:

  • Elapsed time - How long you've been active
  • Distance - Total distance traveled
  • Current speed/pace - Your current movement rate
  • Elevation - Current altitude and total gain

Recording Controls

  • Pause - Temporarily stop recording (for breaks)
  • Resume - Continue from where you paused
  • Stop - End the recording

Adding Waypoints

Mark important locations during your activity:

  1. Tap the Waypoint button (flag icon)
  2. Add a name (optional)
  3. Take a photo (optional)
  4. Tap Save

Finishing Your Recording

  1. Tap Stop when you're done
  2. Review your activity summary:
    • Total distance
    • Duration
    • Elevation gain
    • Average pace
  3. Add a title and description
  4. Tap Save to store the activity

Tips for Better Recordings

Accuracy Tip: Wait for a strong GPS signal before starting. The GPS icon should be solid, not blinking.

  • Keep your phone in an accessible position (pocket, armband, or mount)
  • Enable battery saver mode for long activities
  • Check that location permissions are set correctly
  • Avoid starting recordings indoors

Activity Types

AltoTrails supports various activity types:

  • Hiking
  • Cycling
  • Running
  • Walking
  • Skiing
  • And more...

Select the appropriate type before recording for accurate statistics.


Viewing Past Recordings

Find your recorded activities:

  1. Go to Profile then Activities
  2. Browse your activity list
  3. Tap any activity to view details

Editing Recordings

Made a mistake? You can edit saved recordings:

  1. Open the activity
  2. Tap Edit
  3. Modify title, description, or activity type
  4. Save changes
