Set up AltoTrails and prepare for your first adventure

Step 1: Download the App

Download AltoTrails from your device's app store:


Step 2: Enable GPS

GPS is essential for AltoTrails to work correctly. Here's how to enable it:

On iOS

  1. Open Settings then Privacy & Security then Location Services
  2. Find AltoTrails and select While Using the App
  3. Enable Precise Location for best accuracy

On Android

  1. Open Settings then Location
  2. Make sure location is ON
  3. Find AltoTrails in app permissions
  4. Select Allow only while using the app
  5. Enable Use precise location

Step 3: Create an Account (Optional)

While you can use AltoTrails without an account, signing up unlocks additional features:

  • Sync your activities across devices
  • Share trails with friends
  • Access your profile statistics

Step 4: Calibrate Your Compass

For accurate navigation, calibrate your compass:

  1. Open AltoTrails
  2. Move your phone in a figure-8 pattern several times
  3. The compass icon will indicate when calibration is complete

Step 5: Explore!

You're ready to go! Here are some things to try:

  • Browse nearby trails on the Explore screen
  • Record an activity using the Record button
  • Download offline maps for your next adventure

Tips for First-Time Users

Pro Tip: Download offline maps before heading to areas with limited cell service. This ensures you'll have navigation even without internet.

  • Keep your phone charged or bring a power bank
  • Enable battery saver mode in ALTLAS settings for longer trips
  • Share your live location with a friend or family member for safety
