Import GPX Files

Bring routes from other apps into AltoTrails

Supported Formats

ALTLAS supports importing:

  • GPX (GPS Exchange Format) - Most common
  • KML/KMZ (Google Earth format)
  • GeoJSON - Web mapping format

How to Import

From Files App (iOS)

  1. Locate the GPX file in Files app
  2. Long-press the file
  3. Tap Share
  4. Select ALTLAS

From File Manager (Android)

  1. Find the GPX file in your file manager
  2. Tap the file
  3. Choose Open with ALTLAS

Via Email

  1. Open email with GPX attachment
  2. Tap the attachment
  3. Select Open in ALTLAS

From Cloud Storage

  1. In ALTLAS, go to Profile then Import
  2. Tap Import from Cloud
  3. Select your cloud service (Google Drive, Dropbox, iCloud)
  4. Navigate to and select the file

Direct URL

If you have a link to a GPX file:

  1. Go to Profile then Import
  2. Tap Import from URL
  3. Paste the file URL
  4. Tap Import

After Importing

Once imported, the route appears in your library:

  1. Review the imported trail
  2. Add a name and description
  3. Choose activity type
  4. Set privacy level
  5. Tap Save

Import Options

Handling Duplicate Points

  • Keep all - Import every point
  • Simplify - Reduce points for smoother display

Time Data

If the GPX includes timestamps:

  • Import as activity with timing
  • Calculate pace and speed

Elevation Data

  • Use GPX elevation if included
  • Apply elevation correction if needed

Export from:

  • Garmin devices
  • Suunto watches
  • Other GPS units

Other Apps

Transfer routes from:

  • Strava
  • Komoot
  • Outdoor Active
  • MapMyRun

Websites

Download trails from:

  • OpenStreetMap
  • GPSies
  • Wikiloc

Troubleshooting

Import Failed

  • Verify file is valid GPX/KML/GeoJSON
  • Check file isn't corrupted
  • Try re-downloading the file

Empty Route

  • Ensure file contains track points
  • Some files only contain waypoints
  • Check the original source

Wrong Location

  • File may use different coordinate system
  • Contact support if consistently wrong

Large Files

For files with many points:

  • Import may take longer
  • Consider simplifying before import

Batch Import

Import multiple files at once:

  1. Select multiple GPX files
  2. Share all to ALTLAS
  3. Each becomes a separate trail

Premium Feature

Some import features require Premium:

  • Cloud storage integration
  • URL import
  • Batch import
  • Automatic elevation correction
